The "Cthulhu Mythos" is a term coined by August Derleth, correspondent and collaborator of H.P. Lovecraft and the driving force behind publishing much of Lovecraft's work after his death.
It is a fictional universe that utilizes a pantheon of Old Ones—alien beings outside the framework of humanity's perception—and various books and artifacts left behind by adepts and human or cross-breed cults.
Authors have been writing works connecting with and adding to the Mythos since the 1920s. Such authors include Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Ramsey Campbell, Brian Lumley, Robert Bloch, and Stephen King.
